If You’d Be a Star in the Age of the Internet
If you would be a celebrity today, in the age of the web, then ...
- When you make a silly mistake, a week later people play Flash games recreating the situation.
- When you have a cell phone, people sooner or later hack into it and publish the photos online.
- When you happen to participate in a chat room, people always wonder if you’re “real.”
- When you publish your head shot, within 24 hours it will be circulating on fan sites – only that it has been attached to a naked body.
- People will carefully read every single sentence you write on your web site. And then misquote you.
- If you have a web site, people will try to hack it. Only some will fail.
- If you have a web site forum, then you need to shut it down as soon as you make a political statement in public.
- If you have a web site, you will have a hard time getting it ranked well in search engines no matter how obscure your name.
- If you’re a musician, your songs will be available for free, somewhere; if you’re an actor, your movies will be free, somewhere.
- You will probably still like it.
