Phase 1: innovate Phase 2: buy out strategically important companies Phase 3: buy out your competitors What phase is Google at? In my opinion, starting to slowly decline from Phase 1 and picking up on Phase 2.

Actually, the DoubleClick and YouTube acquisitions would fit into phase 3 too...

I agree with Philipp, Google is currently in Phase 2 and moving towards Phase 3. Most of Google's new products have come from acquisitons, even small features (not entire products).
