Why many English words are not pronounced as they are written?
Why many English words are not written as they are pronounced? Spelling English language at best is unforeseen, sometimes absolutely chaotic. With this idea, certainly, agree schoolchildren and who studies English language all over the world. However researchers of English language assure, that English language has no rules of spelling only for 400 words. The majority of these words are the most used in English language, unfortunately.

The Problems of English spelling system.
The Problems of spelling system arose in evolution of English language, which lasts over thousand years. Some complications have arisen even earlier when Romans by means of the Latin alphabet wrote down old English words. Influence of the French language after the Norman Conquest also has affected English spelling. The French copyists have entered combinations of letters "qu" instead of old English "cw" for example in a word "queen", "gh" instead of "h" for example in a word "night", also some other changes have made to English spelling.

Introduction the typography in 1476 its gave birth the uniform system of spelling. This system displayed a pronunciation of the London region. The further changes in a pronunciation of vowels have taken place in XV century, but because of influence of typography, spelling did not change any more.

Earlier copyists simply wrote a word in a new fashion to display a new pronunciation. Thus, modern spelling displays an out-of-date pronunciation of words, which pertains to Middle Ages.

Despite of numerous attempts to reform, from of XVI century in English spelling has not taken place changes, mostly that was impossible to come to the agreement what can be an alternative spelling!
