Google has released a localized version of Google Maps in Russian. The new site has street level search and directions but no local business search. The satellite imagery allowed me to zoom up to zoom level 18 for Moscow. I also noticed that building outlines are available.

Why are the building outlines labeled with numbers and letters in maps mode? Are those the addresses?

Colin: these maps of Moscow are online since a while, months ago, maybe a year ago. But I agree that with the last update (India + parts of China) some Russian cities got more detailled maps.
And as you can see, you can't search for addresses or businesses so it's not really a "localized version" :-/ |
Oh ok, "localized version" is true because it's translated in Russian, I didn't see that before. Forget all that I said, now it works because Google Maps was unable to trace directions or found "Moscow Kremlin"... |

Note: you have to add letters R and U due to limitation of this forum, you know, . r u ...

But what are these white textures added to the map, follow the buildings 5, 6 and 8 in the middle of the picture: http://maps.google.ru/maps?f=q&hl=fi&geocode=&q=%D0%9C%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B2%D0%B0&sll=60.848256,28.866577&sspn=0.149179,0.462112&ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&ll=55.756009,37.625685&spn=0.002693,0.007221&z=17&iwloc=addr

Tony has changed the urls of Moscow Times Google Maps to include . r u (forum doesn't accept these letters). Thanks! |

http://maps.google.ru went online. With the new Russian version of "Google Answers" and now Google Maps it seems the Russian market gets more important for Google.
