ROFL: Witch Marissa Mayer
|
sorry, 'with' of course... |
Imagine their revenues out of that AdSense Business today! |
If that's true Gmail was in developement for a looong time, since AdSense was working for at least 2-3 years before Gmail's public appearance. It's surprising that AdSense was born from context-sensitive ads in the mail instead of context-sensitive ads in websites (or in content that Google already had available, like answers or groups). |
There's an extra "o" in "iinnovate" in the post. |

I've heard somewhere that Gmail was tested by Google internally for about one year. But maybe it was more. Also, interestingly enough, in the interview Marissa mentioned that Gmail was a much harder project than AdSense, which was easier to ship, so perhaps AdSense development was quite fast. So something like this could be a potential time frame:
[Hypothetical] October 2002: Google starts building Gmail [Hypothetical] December 2002: Google starts building AdSense [Definitely] March 2003: Google launches AdSense [Definitely] April 2004: Google launches Gmail
I've just pinged some people to get more details perhaps and will post an update in case! |
I'm wondering how many project got the axe because of Marissa, and if there were great project axed as Adsense could have been. |
Thanks for listening to us at iinnovate. It was a pleasure to interview her; she's a great storyteller. Gmail + Adsense was my fav part.

It's as if her words don't come out fast enough. |
Any idea what the open-source semantic analysis library that was used?
ps: A search on codesearch does not give good results. :( |
Update: Please check the new update at the end of the post for a clarification of the internal development timeline. |
Orkut big in India? No wonder "Orkut is now available in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu". Every single language of them has about 100 million speakers or more. http://en.blog.orkut.com/2007/08/orkut-in-hindi-bengali-marathi-tamil.html |
In fact, ads on the gmail also a bridge to the world that related with my target.
I buy some domains from Gmail adsense. And find some valuable ideas from Gmail Adsense.
As I buy hosting, I search hosting on Google, then find adsense on the right. Then buy. |
