"(the definite book on Google, and a highly entertaining and informative read, as I can tell after reading through 3/4th of it)"

I think you mean "definitive".

In the beginning Google's SERPs were NOT very relevant – it started to improve dramatically around early 2000.

But, prior to the dramatic improvement it was:

AltaVista
DogPile
AllTheWeb

in that order, as the choice of search geeks.

But SOMETHING dramatic DID happen around early 2000 to Google's SERPs!

Hans, thanks, I corrected this.

As for AltaVista – I'm not sure why others turned to Google, but I switched because AltaVista became crowded, and then forced a pop-up on me. That was the day I looked for something else. And then, of course, I found Google results to be better and it stuck.

I remember "pushing" Google to my friends at work even when Google was running on the University servers.

"Hanan – can you find me this or that?"
"Did you try Google?"

Yes google was amazing. I came across Google around 2000. It made my searches more precise. Made it more easier than the other search engines.

It's funny how noone bothered to use Google, when i pushed it to them. But now even those who complained of the "boring look on the page" are using it :)
