At the bottom of Google Images UK, there's this box:
There's no place like your home. Share your snapshots with the UK at Home project.

with the latter being linked to http://www.ukathome.co.uk/

and on this site's faq page: <<Google Inc. is taking the unprecedented step of promoting UK at Home on the Google Images home page, building an iGoogle widget to allow visitors to see submitted photos sorted by zip code and helping engage the online community. >>

Seems a bit unusual for Google to promote something like this?

From http://www.ukathome.co.uk/sponsors.php

"Google is a strong supporter of the UK at Home project. "We believe that Google, through products such as Google Maps mash-ups and iGoogle gadgets, can play an important role in encouraging people to participate, creating a powerful portrayal of what the concept of home means to all of us", says Marissa Mayer, VP of Search Products and User Experience."

I think they're just collecting content for Google Rooms:
