Yahoo has a view option "Unread", so you can see all the unreads... does Gmail have a way to do this?

well you could "archive" mail you've read and "star" the things you want to get back to.
(It's what I do, although I do have a few very important things always at the bottom of my Inbox)

Sorry, as soon as I hit Submit I realised how to do it Just type the below in to the search box:
is:unread

Even better, type "is:unread" (without the quotes) into the search bar. If you only want unread inbox items, you can type "is:unread label:inbox" instead.

I find it weird Google doesn't have a default navigation entry for this, or something else more intuitive... I was also looking for this before.

There's a Greasemonkey script for saved searches that includes this one in the default list:
