Google is a big supporter of open source, but why did they release presentations in GDocs without .odp support? Just so that they can make a blog post announcing it later when they add support for it? It's an open format and should be easy for them to support it.
Why does the audio player in GMail only play mp3s? Why not Ogg Vorbis?
I guess so far this might better be titled with "Open Formats" rather than "Open Source" but does anybody else have more examples? I'm sure there are more |
Probably because PPT and MP3 are way more common than the formats you mentioned. That's also the reason why Google first launched software for Windows and now releases Mac & Linux versions. That's why many Google apps first work on IE & Firefox and later on Opera & Safari.

I wonder if there will be a GTalk for mac? or will the just leave the iChat setup instructions? |
I think your motivation to push something shouldn't get too much in the way of rational product decisions based on user stats. I would say supporting ODP should have lower priority than say, exporting to PPT (or creating your own presentation templates), which GPresentations still doesn't support. So I think it would be a neat feature but some other features should come first, if they have limited developer-power to deliver everything fast, that is. |
Well i do agree with you, but wouldn't it be really easy for Google to support odp and ogg? |

No. Google and Apple are close and I doubt Google would bother developing a Mac Google talk. Same with Picasa – Google released an extension to iPhoto instead of a new photo editor. |
...yeah, i suppose, and they have GMN for alerting linke GTalk anway... |
I'd love to see Google embrace (even) more open standards, but I'll always love them for choosing Jabber.
PS: I got my Google-branded hoodie and now my random, non-technical, friends asks me why am I supporting a company that works with the Chinese government. So I guess the world is right... They are obviously right, but I like the hoodie anyway. Ok, this was extremely out of topic, sorry ;) |
