Gmail SMTP

Hey,

Are there any limits on using Gmail's SMTP server?

Can I send out several thousand emails/day with my accounts, will this get me flagged/deleted? I'm talking about opt-in subscriptions (from a forum). Using Gmail would simplify things a lot for us.

Thank you

<< Are there limits for sending mail?

Gmail has a number of sending limits in place to prevent abuse of our system, and to help fight spam. If you reach one of Gmail's limits, you'll be temporarily unable to send mail. This limit is generally removed within 24 hours.

Causes include, but are not limited to:

   * Sending a message to more than 500 recipients.
You can send a single message to a maximum of 500 recipients through the web interface, or up to 100 recipients when using POP access. Their email addresses can be distributed among the To, Cc, and Bcc fields. If you communicate with the same group of people on a regular basis, you might be interested in Google Groups.

   * Sending a large number of undeliverable messages.
We suggest verifying your contacts' email addresses. Make sure the email addresses you're sending mail to are valid. It's also important that everyone you are sending mail to is willing to receive it. >>

Found by searching for [limit] on http://mail.google.com/support/ – oddly [limits] returns nothing for me...

I read that page (+ http://www.google.com/mail/help/bulk_mail.html which seems about sending bulk emails TO Gmail, not from) but it doesn't really give me hard numbers to work with...

>* Sending a message to more than 500 recipients.

I am pretty sure all messages are unique to the user, so this doesn't seem to be an issue, you can also unsubscribe from every email.

>* Sending a large number of undeliverable messages.

What is large? 100? 1000? 10000? We obviously validate our users' email addresses but that doesn't prevent them from using services like 10minutemail.com :(I guess we get a fair number of undeliverable emails (full mailboxes aren't uncommon) but that would be to 100? 200? users/day max.

If somebody has experience with this...

>There is a 500 email a day limit on all gmail accounts.

Is this true? Can somebody confirm this?

I was unable to send a single message, even to my own account, during 24 hours after a massive mail (about 400 addresses)

It looks like this even holds for Google Apps

Damn, this is bad.

What about Google Groups? It should work.

yeah that 500 email /day threshold is the watermark that auto triggers based on spamy conditions.. your account gets locked down for 24 hrs.. automatically.. its like one big squid squeezing you from various points :)-

I have verified 500 email / day.

So that stats are true (as per my experiments)
