David, they're just using CSS sprites. A lot of modern websites use this approach to reduce the number of HTTP requests.

Slightly off-topic, but Apple also use it on their navigation. I've never tried it yet.

blogoscoped.com/forum/113845.h ...
I prefer this homepage than the new one.
And just to make this clear, What's the difference between Google.cn and google.cn/hp?sp=china ?
Why did Google create this page? (after all, It's not a part of iGoogle)

How do Chinese users get to this URL? Google.cn itself still seems to show the old version, and also not offer a link to the alternative version... or is it geo-targeted?
Where did you find this Hexieshehui?

google.cn/ig(anythinghere) returns different error page than a "normal" 404 page like: google.cn/ieasd/

Chinese users might be randomly redirected to the new page, just like other testing pages. But I really don't like the idea of having so many links. Also, swithing between different types of results (web to image) isn't using AJAX, rather, you would be redirected.
The auto-completion is really really nice though. :)

This is something that Chinese websites like sohu.com can learn from. Their is simply atrocious, and filled with so many irrelevant ads scattered like flies in a diner. This is what they should become, with better arranged ads (no pop-ups or pop-unders or floating balloons).

I think many people are thinking from a US point of view. Chinese ppl seem to like cool effects and shiny stuff.

I don't get it. Baidu is the leader in China and it has a very clean and Googley homepage (baidu.com). Why would Google's new homepage give better results?

That's coincidental, I guess the simpler the logo the more likely it looks like other logos... I won't claim that I've invented this style :) The font is Slack Casual btw.
