Hello, I have this problem from time to time but now it is terrible, retrieving Gmail as POP is downloading many old already retrieved messages!
What can I do?

Go to "Settings" then click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" and change "Enable POP for all mail" to "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on".

I mean that is the setting I used when I started to use POP long ago.
Why Gmail from time to time start downloading ald email?. Is it a bug?.
