A new page in Google Translate, about "Tools":
http://translate.google.com/translate_tools?hl=en

If I'm not wrong, already known stuff, but this:
"Add the Translate gadget to your webpage, and offer instant access to automatic translations of that page."

(Excuse my ignorance, but are there other instances of Google gadgets for personal webpages?)

yes it's new, and it seems there is a bug on this page :
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en > tabs have disappeared and all is on one unique page.

Depending on which requirements are met, Google Gadgets can run:
- on iGoogle, the former Google Personalized Homepage
- on personal webpages, like a blog sidebar or something
- on the desktop via the Google Desktop program
- as of recently, in some social applications, starting with Orkut (as part of the "OpenSocial" framework)
[not 100% sure, but weren't you able to include gadgets on the iGoogle mobile variant too, for cellphones? I'd have to check...]

But it depends on the kind of gadget. The most simplest gadget automatically runs in all places, AFAIK. For instance, I was able to drop a game I made into the Orkut sandbox recently. But then there's some restrictions, e.g. modules that are required to be inline can't be included in webpages. Hmm, wonder if there's a handy table somewhere which shows which Google Gadget features are supported on which platforms?

Thank you! And, again, excuse my ignorance :)

Or, to keep it on: what about copyright? Can I use a gadget created by anyone on my page?

Hmmm, it's Translate, not Tranlate (see the title) ;)

The new translation for English to Chinese just isn't as good as before ...

Good question. Technically, person A can create a gadget which is simply a wrapper about say a Flash game created by person B. Then, when you – person C :) – includes person A's gadget in your page (because you assume gadgets are made for republication, and Google allows you to embed this snippet etc.) you might later get a copyright infringement notice by Person B... the owner of the Flash your site is now showing!

Yes, something like this actually happened to us at http://GoogleModules.com ...

I suppose the situation is similar to YouTube and embedding...

Make your webpage available in other languages-- this is neat. I rememeber a long time ago some website did this by hand and then it stopped working when google made some change.

Not sure if this is new but i haven't seen it before.

It was discovered by Ionut some time ago:
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/11/translation-widgets-for-your-site.html

But I think it's new here ;)

Oh, i see it's at least 20 days old. I guess it's still relatively new. I'd like to see Google start automatically detecting languages though so that you only have to select the language you'd like it translated into. I feel like i saw them start to do this somewhere but i forget...

(I remember I posted it before Ionut writing in his blog, but I can be wrong.)
