Truncating it to 1400 bytes seems to also redirect to google.com.

Appending (i.e. embedding in the url) my own message to that or the original also seems to redirect to google.com.

They seem to be using a data base to translate these.
It might put less load on their server if they encoded the target url in the huge url.
