I think they're suggesting downloading the Google Talk client because they think the clients is where most people use Instant Messaging.

I remember complaints when it was the other way round a few months back. I personally can't see why they can't have a three column layout for each way to use Gtalk network. And maybe make it clearer on how to connect to Gtalk network using another client (basically, summarise the help on this).

to be honest I think its useless. Spotlight and custom dashboard widgets already do all that google desktop can, and more besides.
