I wonder how I missed the Panoramio acquisition. maybe I signed up before June, or they just hadn't updated their logo yet. |
If flickr/etc outputs KML files and references those in their sitemap, then they'd get automatically indexed and appear with the blue markers just as panoramio/youtube/book search. Little article on that here: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/sitemap.html |

KML is Google-owned because it means Keyhole Markup Language and Google acquired Keyhole :) Reason to repeat: "The quality of Google’s services will suffer if they become too self-referential." Google should index the world's data, not tell people how to format it. (Not that I would mind more people using KML, and in this specific case Flickr may well decide to support KML, but just as general direction, IMO.) Google Video is another good example of Google's bad practice: http://blogoscoped.com/forum/118560.html |
<<Flickr may well decide to support KML>>
Flickr already supports KML.
e.g.: http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/geo/United+States/New+Mexico&format=kml_nl |
Are those publicly linked though by Flickr for all locations? That needs to be the case for Google's crawler to add them to Google Maps right (besides being allowed via robots.txt)? Do Flickr images already appear on Google Maps? |
Flickr links to geoRSS feeds and KML files in Flickr places: http://www.flickr.com/places/Ireland/Dublin/Dublin
They're indexed by Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fapi.flickr.com%2Fservices%2Ffeeds%2Fgeo%2F+format%3Dkml_nl&btnG=Search |
So do they appear in Google Maps? |
> Yes, why wouldn't they?
Ah, then I take back whatever I said in my post about Flickr! I added an update to the post. |
Microsoft is now supporting KML in their mapping product as well. |
The Videomap network link for Google Earth http://www.videomap.it/kml/videomap.kmz is indexed well in Google Maps and drive more traffic to Google Maps and Youtube but there is no mention by Google |
