Reminds me of this article on Wired on Digital Models

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.11/virtual.html

Quote:

...all of the talent [digital models] that Cerami first auditioned looked creepy and waxen. CG artists call this the "uncanny valley," the point at which a near-human model looks so real that every flaw and shortcoming is thrown into high relief.

Unqote.

This idea of realism being a negative occurred to me when comparing EQ 2 to World of Warcraft. WoW has the "cartoony" feel to it and EQ 2 went for realism. The realistic graphics are a lot uglier to me.

The true power of 3D graphics lies not in the ability to render perfection but to render our flaws :) Our messy rooms, our dust, our physical asymmetry, our poor skin and body hair.. 3D worlds are full of perfection, like perfectly square buildings and perfectly round semicircles. Isn't that the opposite of realism?
