on my this is interesting news..
"The “new” 404 error page ‘conveniently’ includes a Google search box and if used by a visitor will drive the visitor away from your website."

I think it's helpful and you can disable it by unchecking "Browse by name" in the settings. Google even lists it as a feature: http://toolbar.google.com/T5/intl/en/features.html#ld
There's a cool extension for Firefox with a similar idea: http://roachfiend.com/archives/2006/08/28/errorzilla-useful-error-pages-for-firefox/ |
wow....there's no way they're going to be able to keep doing that. How did google not see this as a problem? |
It doesn't replace your custom 404 error page. It only works for: default 404 error pages (which are not useful), DNS errors and connection failures.

I guess i'm a little confused. |
Custom error page (generated by Microsoft): http://www.microsoft.com/vistasucks
Default error page: http://www.example.com/examples |
Oh, i see what you mean.
here's a nice 404 page that hit digg haha http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/Mordarkea/9404.jpg |
And this is now on TechCrunch. And it seems little to no research was done to find that this is on Beta software and not enabled by default. |
I tested this by installing IE beta toolbar and it is enabled by default. Ofcourse it deosn't show up when a customized 404 is in place. But don't you think this is intruisive. I remember Lunarpages did the same thing few months back, i strongly feel this is a bad practice. |

Odd, when I Restored to the default settings, it was disabled. |
