The Pentagon has banned Google Earth from making detailed street-level video maps of U.S. military bases. A message sent to all Defense Department bases told officials to not allow the popular mapping Web site from taking panoramic views inside the facilities.

[Moved from "Pentagon Bans Google Teams From Bases" – Tony]

"The Pentagon has banned Google Earth teams from making detailed street-level video maps of U.S. military bases.

A message sent to all Defense Department bases and installations around the country late last week told officials to not allow the popular mapping Web site from taking panoramic views inside the facilities."

I.e. users will not see Street View pictures from military bases in the United States.

If it's against Google's policy, what ramifications does that have? If the Google employee who took the photos has ties to a terrorist organization, for example, should we be worried?

<<and Google said it was actually against their policy anyway to take pictures which need special requests to military bases>>

So why did they take the pictures?

Apparently an employee or several employees made an error due to over-eagerness and violated the policy. Now imagine, but that's just speculation, all the policy violations happening inside of Google – privacy policy for how they handle user data anyone? – which you will NOT hear about ;)

Google is an US base company. Of course its policy can not be against US security policy and measurements.

I wish one day Google headquarter will move to Mars.
