Probably they're still undecided if those sections should be placed in the right sidebar, in the middle of the page or somewhere else. Maybe Universal Search doesn't work too well. |
I thought the whole point OF "universal search" was that search results no longer just consist of standard text-based results, but can include videos, shopping items, images, etc... and rather than putting the alternate info at the top... or the bottom... it could be sandwiched with the results, like the fourth position down.
So, I'm not sure how the further enhancement of universal search suggests that universal search doesn't work too well. It's a process of constantly fine-tuning the algorithm and maximizing results.

The whole point of the universal search was to integrate results from specialized search engines in the standard results list, not to create special containers where to place them. |
Google Korea already shows results from Image Search, blogs, news sites in the sidebar: http://www.google.co.kr/search?complete=1&hl=ko&q=pandas&btnG=Google+%EA%B2%80%EC%83%89&lr= |
What's the fuck with the first "relative search" in the first screenshot of this thread???? >> "barack the magic negro"... |
I'm from Italy and I'm seeing on a friend's monitor a similar thing today. Google results sometimes show a couple of <HR> lines – so there are three groups of results in the page. Apparently, there are no differences between the results nature, and there aren't any 'Video Results' or 'Shopping Results' titles. This is happening once on a while to my collegue while it doesn't happen on my browser (same public IP). |
Not happy about this. It will definitely throw off click percentages. http://eyetools.com/blog/images/google/eyetools_google_search.jpg
I really like Google Korea's solution. Replace adwords results for image results! |
There's no reason why they should not try to maximize the ugly design they've set forth, and put containers into the SERPs for better organization of verticals in their Universal Search scheme.
If click percentages change, it's because the drive-by clickers will be distracted by these new shiny objects. Your targeted traffic should still click appropriately. Losing a small percentage of mindshare or lucky sales from a giant pool of worthless traffic doesn't worry me too much. I can live with that in order to organize the SERPs better. It helps in SEO, in the end, as things might be less haphazard. |
