TechCrunch reports rumors that Google will launch their database system BigTable to developers next week. It would be a service like Amazon's SimpleDB. Sounds cool – as far as I know, most of Google's own services are using it, so it must be very versatile. |
This will be an interesting move by Google. With the news of Google building more data centers around the world, it makes you wonder when they would open that up to use by third parties. If I could have the speed of Google with any site I built, that would be amazing! |
My money is on the NO, THEY AREN'T DOING IT side, at least not until they finished building those data centers. |
Good Service. Is this service compatible with mysql? |
Hong : Mysql is one of the worst database software ever made ;)
I think BigTable will be interesting only for enterprises which handle millions of data. Facebook, Digg, Myspace, etc. People currently using Mysql, Postgresql, Oracle (not sure for this one) will not switch to BigTable. |
BigTable is not a relational database like MySQL, it's just like a big spreadsheet where you add records at the bottom. Without the complexity of a relational database, it's much more scalable and can be used for TB of data.

You can also explain BigTable just as an usual database, without any link/relation between the tables, isn't it? |

Today there will be another Campfire One. Last time, they announced OpenSocial, so they might announce something big again today. |

Interesting how Dave Winer forecasted this pretty much (thanks to a source he called "pig") but then also said it was only hypothetical... http://scripting.com/stories/2008/03/30/whyWouldGoogleWebServicesC.html |
