Found on a screenwriting blog, of all places [
http://complicationsensue.blogspot.com/2008/03/why-ill-never-be-studio-executive.html
] a link to an essay "You weren't meant to have a boss" on the
difference between programmers working their own startups and those @Google (etc).

"[Paul Graham sees them as] lions in the wild versus lions in the zoo.
The lions in the zoo seem »both more WORRIED and HAPPIER« [ emphasis mine... whereas the startup-programmers] have no idea what they'd do for a living if people stopped hiring them, or paying them. But their frustrations are the frustrations of lions in the wild. They are always stalking the next antelope, or trying to keep the hyenas off of one they've already caught. They all seem so ALIVE."

We've been speculating here some about what made premier GAE-sample HuddleChat authors copycat a third-party app, rather than come up with an original, novel 'un.

Perhaps part of the answer is to be found in a "happy-zoo-next-meal-guaranteed" frame of mind @Google (etc.) outlined in that rather thoughtful essay.... another of its long-range implications being (...reading between the lines now...) that, if GoogleTrek Enterprize continues to grow in size, ergo becoming all more like the Redmondian Empire, it *may* in the end have to break itself up into small, even fiercely-competitive, units to retain its lead, rather than continue present flight towards utopian Singularity indefinitely.

A Bob Dylan song comes to mind...

<<You may be an ambassador to England or France,
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance,
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world,
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage,
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage,
You may be a business man or some high degree thief,
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody ...>>
