CNET.com News Blog reports:

"Google is typically tight-lipped about it the inner workings of its search business, but there are a few nuggets worth looking at in a Popular Mechanics interview with Udi Manber, the Google vice president who oversees search quality. Among them: Google rejiggered its search algorithm 450 times last year.

Interesting interview. From the source:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/blogs/technology_news/4259137.html

Udi Manber, asked about Google's philosophy:

<<I don’t think it’s about philosophy. It’s about getting people what they need, and about getting the results to be as accurate and fast as possible. We’re innovating, and concentrating just on the relevancy of results. Last year we made over 450 improvements to the algorithm.>>

I think 450 improvements is more precise than "rejiggering something 450" times because the latter seems to imply that they roll out an algo change almost every day, which is probably unlikely. Perhaps they simply had X changes each of which consisted of several improvements which they rolled out X times during that year.

This bit...
<<I wish people would put more effort into thinking about how other people will find them and putting the right keywords onto their pages.>>
... is odd. Does he want people to add keywords purely for search engine bots or ...? If so, there was the keyword tag for that, but as we know it's ignored due to spam. Google's general webmaster policy seems to be to make pages for users, not search engines.

Yes Phillip that was an odd statement from Search Quality Engineer. You need the right keywords on your pages to rank, lol. Maybe they web has a lot bigger issue as far as crawlable content than we may think.
