Google is a master of their own Game :)- online brand equity..
e.g by ensuring that googlesucks.com (etc) is not avialable, they then ensure that the index's (of all propertiies, MSN, YAHOO etc) dont get polluted at all.
In the long run is just plain brand name strategy at its finest...

Logically speaking, they have never really needed anything other than google.com, since they can use subdomains (maps.google.com, groups.google.com, etc.) for everything, making for much more sensible addresses than the profusion of other domains the marketroids insist on.
