Did anyone using Google Gears + Google Docs have ever had to sign-in without password ? Feels pretty odd...

yeah, I did each time I used Docs (not Reader though).

Could be a security risk on shared/family computers.

I guess this happens when multiple accounts are using Google Gears. They need some way to differentiate which account you want to access and if you had to enter your password, that would mean your password would need to be stored somewhere locally (albeit probably hashed) so that it could authenticate you.

Since all offline data is available and accessible on the hard drive (in what I believe to be an unencrypted format) I don't think this is such an issue. Sure, it makes it easier to get at that data but users are warned not to use Google Gears if you're using a shared computer anyway...

I only have one Google account that's used on my PC and I see that screen.

Suppose your right about the other data on your PC, it's probably just because it feels like your logging in to Google without a password
