I had a surprise this morning when I saw the Google Reader for Mobile interface had been updated on my N73. On closer inspection, it seems this is the same as the interface offered for the iPhone. I wonder whether this was intentional or whether it's a mistake because the user agent for my phone's browser includes "AppleWebKit" or "Safari". Here are some example user agent strings where you can see the similarities.
N73: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.1; U; [en]; NokiaN73-1/3.0638.0.0.1 Series60/3.0) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413
iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3 |
Here are some screenshots (taken from Firefox but you get the idea):

iPhone: http://blogoscoped.com/files/more/google-reader-iphone.png |
Of course, you can always directly go to: http://www.google.com/reader/i/ |
Of course, but that's not exactly the same interface though. That link is for the "Mobile" iPhone interface linked from the bottom of the UI. The once I'm seeing is the "Classic" iPhone interface. (Try changing your user agent and you'll see what I mean...) |
I cannot backtrace to the item, but I definitely browsed past some info in the past few days on Google doing some iPhone'ish things to Nokia (which I don't have, ergo of little interest to me). The closest I can backtrace to is this: http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgooglemobile.blogspot.com%2F2008%2F06%2Fpicasa-now-customized-for-nokia-s60-and.html
but there's nothing about it where it ought to have been, at gReader blog http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgooglereader.blogspot.com
so it must've been elsewhere, Digg, perhaps? |

It's intentional. The Google Reader Blog mentions only the iPhone in the heading, but the body says "designed for the iPhone and other mobile phones with advanced browsers". http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2008/05/brand-new-google-reader-for-iphone.html |
If it's intentional, why did they only make the switch last night? (Maybe they're trying to make sure they serve the right version to iPhone 3G users and are catching a few others at the same time...) |
