Firefox 3 delayed?Mike | Tuesday, June 17, 2008 15 years ago • 10,651 views |
"Guinness World Record", not likely to happen. Only a few hours left of tuesday now.
"All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours – it’s that easy.
The official date for the launch of Firefox 3 is June 17, 2008."

How should one know that? Any source? 10 am is the same time as 17:00 GMT?
Sad that they can't manage the marketing as professionals. |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
I kind of wished they'd postpone to fix the address bar dropdown... I think its selection of what to show and what not to show has gotten far worse since Firefox 2. And it also seems to need to be retrained whenever you clear your history?
In Firefox 2, going to this forum usually consisted of entering "bl..." or something and then hitting the down key once. Now I have to "train" the system and call the forum a lot of times in succession just to make it appear in position 3, it is just not as intuitive anymore I think. |
Ash | 15 years ago # |
Philipp Lenssen: Ah, the "AwesomeBar" issue. Trust me, it improved with use (although it does get reset when you clear history, but then what do you expect). It grows on you, you'll soon find you can't live without it.
If you clear the history a lot, then its not for you, check out the "oldbar" extension |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
The main problem is that it takes so long every time to train that new bar, I think there's a lot of room for improvement there. Instead, the new bar seems to be a little bit too feature-heavy, which also makes scanning it a bit harder, I think. I switch computers, I clear my data, I do all these things and don't want to extensively train the browser every time.
I will check out the oldbar, it sounds just like the extension I need. Hopefully new versions of Firefox won't add too many of these things requiring extensions :) |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
Hmm, the old bar seems to only change the design, but not the functionality of the bar. I just deleted almost all of my bookmarks, that helped a bit but it does not help completely. Right now, if I enter "b" for instance and hit the down arrow, it suggests to me every bookmark (and perhaps other history soon – I just deleted all history to test) that has the letter "b" anywhere in the URL... even when it's in 150th position in some parameter. That is really useless... and it even puts that suggestion above the suggestion of say "blogoscoped.com". |
Voyagerfan5761 | 15 years ago # |
Philipp: You might take a look at Weave (http://labs.mozilla.com/featured-projects/#weave). It offers bookmark and history synchronization, among other things. |
mike | 15 years ago # |
its gone 12:40 in the only time zone that matters.. GMT and still no links, that doesn't sound like a download 'day' to me.. more like a few hours |
Tony Ruscoe | 15 years ago # |
There are still four hours until launch and the launch "day" will last 24 hours. So, you can download it between 17 June 2008 17:00:00 GMT and 18 June 2008 16:59:59 GMT (inclusive) and it should still count.

Colin Colehour | 15 years ago # |
Voyagerfan5761, Weave was discussed here about 5 months ago: http://blogoscoped.com/forum/119230.html |
Motti | 15 years ago # |
Philipp Lenssen: the suggestions should be based on frequency of visit as well a how recently you accessed a site (the so-called "frecency" score) so as soon as you go to blogoscoped.com more than once it should jump to the top of your list for the letter 'b'.
I agree however that mozilla have missed a trick in that when the 'frenceny' scores are equivalent, it should exploy lexographic sorting that sorts first based on terms appearing in the domain name. Nothing stopping you submitting a bug & fix for this though :)
The advantage of their matching is that it's possible to type 'firefox blogoscoped' and you'll get a list of all the pages in Blogoscoped that were about firefox, (including this thread) as the term matching is done on a term-by-term basis – once you get used to this it becomes quite a killer feature. |

It's not available til 10am PT? Shouldn't it have gone up at midnight my time?

Nope. See the link I posted before.
<< Firefox 3 available today at 17:00 UTC (10am PDT)
This morning at 10:00am UTC we began the process of sending the final version of Firefox 3 to our mirror network to prepare for Download Day. We’re just as excited as you are for our upcoming release, but we’re still putting the finishing touches on Firefox 3: preparing the new mozilla.com website, getting our severs ready for downloads, and doing our final pre-launch checks. We expect to be done at 17:00 UTC – find out what time that is where you are. You can even follow our progress if you’d like! >>

There is some thing wrong, this morning i got a drupal interface asking me to install "install.php" or update "update.php" and giving me the user name ...
|
Kirby Witmer | 15 years ago # |
and now it appears like firefox's website has gone DOWN!! |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
It's not down here, but it is 1 hour past the release time, and it still isn't there. |
Kirby Witmer | 15 years ago # |

It's not just you! www.mozilla.com looks down from here. |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
Looks like they're a bit behind schedule...

Mambo | 15 years ago # |
I spent 3 hours of my life tagging all my existing bookmarks. It's a shame I'll probably never get that time back, but it does help the "awesome bar" issue a lot! |
Kirby Witmer | 15 years ago # |
heh.. now i get this page on mozilla.com.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/outages.html
|
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
wow, getfirefox.com is out periodically too |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
Probably took the site down to make the changes for 3... |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 15 years ago # |
I think 0 downloads is a world record for the new version of a popular browser, as well. |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
its still not down though, i can still get through every 3 or 4 refreshes. I even got the http error on the outages page. talk about irony |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
its almost up!, new page design, but still 2.0.0.14 |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
Mozilla.com has the Firefox 3 button, but still links to 2. looks like they're getting there... |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
cnet has updates online too

|
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
bumrocky thanks
they say that they get 3.0, but i still only get 2... |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
wtf?!?!, I now have the old site |
Motti | 15 years ago # |
If you're desperate for it, the download link (works for me) is: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US
(can change the lang= to en-GB or fr-CA or whatever you want)
All the same Mozilla have asked that you be patient and wait for the official announcement to be certain they track all the downloads for their world record download thing.
Then again the Mozilla Europe site (official) has it already announced so I guess it's good to go. http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/ |
TOMHTML | 15 years ago # |
Ionut I like so much your phrase :)

The pages and links seem to be up now and they say 3.0, but the link appears to be for 2.0. |
Motti | 15 years ago # |
The Mozilla Europe link http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/ works |
Haochi | 15 years ago # |
Just grab it from one of its mirrors: http://mozilla.mirror.facebook.com/firefox/releases/3.0/win32/
More: http://www.mozilla.org/mirrors.html
But I guess I will wait for the more official one. :) |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
Haochi thats what I'm doing, waiting for the official one |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
its there btw. |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
Site's showing link to 3 now...but can't dl yet. |
bumrocky | 15 years ago # |
DL worked...looks like all is good! |
Haochi | 15 years ago # |
Okay, the links are working (for the moment). http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
all right, 16KB/s! |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Eh...wasn't FF3 supposed to have a brand new logo... *confused* |
Kirby Witmer | 15 years ago # |
i managed to download it finally. I kept clicking on the download button on the homepage until one time it finally went through. |
Bilal | 15 years ago # |
Now all is ok,
Did take all this to change a link and a logo! |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
do make sure your download ends at~ 7.3 MB because I downloaded it twice and the second quit early at around 4MB |
Mysterius | 15 years ago # |
James Xuan: Perhaps you're thinking of the new themes/icons?
I'm glad that getfirefox.com finally updated its download link to 3.0 so that I can download it officially. I was feeling quite frustrated that all the official links were either to v2 or not working at all. But now I can officially be part of the world record attempt and fulfill my pledge. :D |
Bilal | 15 years ago # |
now a well designed page here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?p=downloadday |
Haochi | 15 years ago # |
Anyone noticed the "Firefox vs. IE"? (it's below the fold) I think it's a bit unfair to IE, but whatever. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/#feature-vsie |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Mysterious, no i thought it was said that they got the original logo designer to go back to his prototype drawing and try to come up with something new for the logo, and he posted a snippet of it in the blog post... |
Stephen Tordoff | 15 years ago # |
Haochi
I think that the comparision with IE is fair actually (Not below the fold here though) |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Mysterious, anyone who wants to listen
here is the blog post I referred to http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2007/12/firefox-logo-getting-an-update/ and http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/starting-again-from-scratch-1 |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Also, from http://blog.mozilla.com/faaborg/2007/12/13/a-first-look-at-firefox-3s-icons/
<<In addition to refreshing all of the icons inside of Firefox, this release will also see a refresh to the Firefox application icon itself. We have contracted Jon Hicks to update our application icon for Firefox 3. Jon worked with Steven Garrity, Daniel Burka and Stephen Desroches to create the original Firefox application icon, so Jon is now getting a chance to re-imagine the original vision they had for the Firefox icon, while updating it to have a sleeker, more modern, and higher fidelity appearance.>>
I want my new logo! |
MarWi | 15 years ago # |
I still get the FF2 download on the official website. Anyone else? |
Bilal | 15 years ago # |
yes every one else |
Brinke Guthrie | 15 years ago # |
How do you set Yahoo Mail as the default mailto: |
MarWi | 15 years ago # |
Well, judging by the comments above, it's not the same for everyone. Some people seem to get the correct link. |
scjm | 15 years ago # |
This Firefox 3 is disgusting.
What I don't like:
The new forward/backward button
The navigation bar. Previously when I would type "b" into said bar, this website would be second or third. Under the new scheme it wasn't in view, but instead what I saw were websites I have only visited once.
The Web 2.0 style icons and buttons. There is no point in having low opacity shadowed, 3d'ed icons that don't stand out. They need to be bold and they need to stand out.
I have reinstalled Firefox 2. |
Bilal | 15 years ago # |
scjm
FF3 is far better than FF2. i can't return back to version 2. |
MarWi | 15 years ago # |
Got it now. Here is a workaround:
http://splogs.livejournal.com/44400.html
It already has more than 2% market share:
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=31 |
scjm | 15 years ago # |
I'm sure the backend is better, but I just can't stand the interface. |
Philipp Lenssen | 15 years ago # |
Scjm, I agree with both of your criticism points in regards to the new address bar helper and the button style. I think it's the age old problem that sometimes when people try to optimize too much, they go over board and that backfires. A browser shouldn't make you think, it should more or less just get out of the way smartly and elegantly, IMO. |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 15 years ago # |
There's a classic theme available at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6554
You may need to disable add-on compatibility check to install it (set extensions.checkCompatibility to false in about:config). |
Bilal | 15 years ago # |
FF3 Crazy day!!!
what is happenning on page http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/ Total Downloads = 1,544,686
one hour before it was greater than 1 700 000
in spain it was > 130 000 now it is 83 000 in Algeria it was about 1200 now it is 629 morocco was > 1600 now it is about 800 and every where the same thing.
What is that?
|
scjm | 15 years ago # |
I think it might be counting down from the "promised" ones they had earlier... Just a guess. |
Keith Chan | 15 years ago # |
3 Million downloads already! |
Keith Chan | 15 years ago # |
4 Million! |
somerandombystander | 15 years ago # |
5 Million! |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 15 years ago # |
The final release is identical to RC3 (which is identical to RC2 for Windows and Linux). |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
This is turning out better than they expected despite the problems! Only 1.5 million people pledged! |
Mrrix32 | 15 years ago # |
6.5 Million!
I've been using it since the 1st beta and am pleased I've got the final thing now. At my college they still run 1.5 with no flash so everyone runs FF off their pendrives anyway. |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Now that Download day has almost ended, with almost 8 million downloads, has anyone else realized that it has garnered over 4 percent market share in 1 day! That MUST be another new record! |
Ionut Alex. Chitu | 15 years ago # |
<< it has garnered over 4 percent market share in 1 day >>

James It's just passed 8 milllion now http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/ |
Tony Ruscoe | 15 years ago # |
> Citation needed.
Mozilla Foundation CEO John Lilly says so here:
http://john.jubjubs.net/2008/06/18/firefox-3s-first-24-hours/
<< Firefox 3 market share has grown to about 4% worldwide [*] >>

Via: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/18/firefox-3-downloaded-83-million-times-in-first-24-hours/ |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Thanks Tony, hadn't seen Ionut's reply |
scjm | 15 years ago # |
If 8 million is 4%, are you trying to say that there are only 200 million web users worldwide? |
James Xuan | 15 years ago # |
Hmmm... You make a good point... |
Motti | 15 years ago # |
scjm: they used to use a multiplier of 3 (to compensate behind the many users that are behind gateways, etc.), see http://john.jubjubs.net/2007/11/27/mozilla-firefox-market-share/ (search for ADU). Still that would give 600M internet population which AFAIK is below current estimates. |
