Was Alex really the first? I have heared he's just another copycat, too, though I don't know, who was the first either.

Where did you hear that from?

Sounds like a job for the "WayBack machine!". OR if you could look at Historical Google Cache. Regardless of these tools, some one will have to be the internet Detective.

I bet Alex was the first.. his blog and the rest of his site seems very sincere. I'm glad it worked for him.

Whether he's first or not, he's the first one to make it work. The question: will these people renew. I wonder whether there is an actual return from it.

No, I've been on the net since before there was a web, and nobody's ever done anything quite like this before. The only thing I can think of that compares dates back to the days of banner ad barter networks, when some people would put as many as they could on a page, leading to rules requiring *some* content. (Of course, there are porn sites that are all interconnected ads and no content – which has more to do with gullibility and secretiveness than marketing.)

It's so absurdly simple, it's amazing nobody thought of it before. It's so absurd, nobody thought it would work, but it did. If anybody did think of it, they probably peremptorily discarded it for those two reasons.

Interesting... Peter Brady writes this guy who was first invested $1000 to get his idea out via a press release:

There's something suspicious going on here. Look at the alexa stats – that doesn't look like general user behaviour, it looks managed.

This is not new. AOL from what I remember 5 years ago was plastered with ads around the perimeter. And there was a free internet access company that did the same thing...sell ads all around the top, bottom and sides to pay for the free internet access. The ONLY difference is that there is NOTHING on his site except the ads and they are in the middle where there would be content on any other site.

I just created a post myself on this. He is 912K up and left with only 88K to go. He'll make it before jan ends.
