Is this new? I can play embedded YouTube videos on the iPhone... Like the video on this page for example: http://www.google.com/goog411 |
I guess it's new with the iPhone 2.0 software... http://www.intomobile.com/2008/04/16/iphone-os-20-firmware-shows-embedded-youtube-videos.html |
From the posted link above:
"Yes, the next version of the iPhone OS will feature the ability to embed YouTube videos directly into a webpage. What you get is an embedded YouTube video playing on the website like you'd expect from your desktop.
But, there's a catch. You can only view embedded YouTube videos that have already been converted to H.264 encoding by YouTube.
In other words, videos that are available through the iPhone's YouTube application will be viewable as embedded videos on webpages." |

Speaking of which – I can not find any information concerning the extent to (or the proportion of) which YT original-H.263-coded items have been converted to H.264 format; NOR principles acc. to which videos get picked up, or otherwise, for reencoding. I understand that YT is in the process of converting it all, but is there some POLICY PAPER laying down the law? Once accomplished, will there be two formats in parallell, or is former codec's repository to be phased out entirely? |
