Another sign of the change in attitudes is smoking by the cartoon characters Fred and Barney from The Flintstones:

Come on, guys... how can you be so naïve? Clearly, that ad is not about some brand of cigarettes, or even smoking. Rather, it seems to be a sophisticated promotion for safe, celibate sex alternative in an age when contraception was a four-letter word, and largely non-existent besides. Hence this proscribed form: a pair of obviously-adult, young-but-not-too-young lovers align on a hilltop at sunset, or perhaps it is already dusk – after a hard day's lovin' – so that would be an "afterfag" of sorts. In which the female of the species, still not sated, asks to participate by way of a subtle request to blow her some more (FEELING; "smoke" is just a word-prop here). Admit it, you were wrong in thinking this was mere ad for smokes. |
ianf: well, given that Chesterfield was paying for the ad, I think it's a sure bet that it's an ad trying to promote the sale of Chesterfield cigarettes. |
