Don't know if this has been discussed already but it just occured to me:

Does Chrome explain the redesign of Google's favicons. They are really promoting the web-app side of the net, and the default icon for any application shortcut is the page's favicon. Whilst a lot of people preferred the old capital G as the google favicon, it certainly looked pretty ugly when blown up to icon sized proportions.....
