Google just added a new tool to labs:

Google Audio Indexing (GAudi)
Search what people are saying inside YouTube videos
http://labs.google.com/gaudi

It appears it is only for searching political speeches right now. I wonder if they will ever allow searching against all YouTube videos. There's a page with lots of FAQs here: http://labs.google.com/gaudi/static/faq.html

Above 1 comments were made in the forum before this was blogged,

Could this just be a hold over from the original Google Video which allowed you to search the Closed Caption data from TV transmissions? Rather than some fancy speech to text search?

Matt Large, it's speech recognition, not just indexing Closed Caption data. From the FAQ, it says "The speech research group at Google has developed its own speech recognition system (called GAudi, for Google Audio Indexing), which powers both Google Audio Indexing and the Google Elections Video Search gadget."

Can we also have image search from videos – or video search from videos – as well? With human face / movement recognition thrown in? "Hey G, here is a clip of my ex-gf, and an image of a guy. Please list any Youtube vids which have both of them together, naked?"

Is anyone concerned about this from a "Big Brother" kind of standpoint? I understand that if you're putting yourself in front of a camera then you should pretty much be ok with the content being viewed. I understand that this may serve to hold more people accountable. But what about the negative side of things?

I think Phillipp has "jokingly" provided futuristic commentary of Google gone awry in the past. I think it was a preemptive arrest kind of post based on emails, blog entries, videos, etc that a person posts and the likelihood of them committing a crime (like "Minority Report").

How many times in our past have things been designed for the greater good, that end up being used against you? This could be a wonderfully powerful tool, especially when it comes to politicians who speak out of both sides of their face. Hold them accountable! Bravo!!

But then again, those same politicians may pass a law that forces Google to use their technology against you. The Bush administration has already established the ability to wage wars preemptively (Bush Doctrine) and wiretapping. Thanks to Google, they won't even need a law for videos, just the Internet and a typing digit.

Your phone calls have been used against you. Your emails have been used against you. Videos have always been used against you... now it will just be easier. Thanks Google. Your technology will likely be used for the next Holocaust. What's my number?

Will it also be able to get reverse recordings of spoken words from vinyl LP's and we will finally be able to get the truth on what has been records?

I'd love to see this somehow expand to the desktop-- could Google open source it PLEASE? We need something like this for voice interfaces for computers so we don't have to spend a bunch of money on proprietary speech recognition software that only works for windows.

Google as always has come up with the most unthinkable product!!! 'Gaudi' is a tool speech analyzer which goes through video files and indexes the words mentioned!!!

This will revolutionize the the entire concept of Video Searching. Now we need not rely on the Title of the video or it's description. The searches would be more accurate as we would be searching the contents of the video file even without viewing it!!!

Google, i bow to thee.
