Now sure how useful this thing is... it just puts two random quotes on the same topic by two different people next to each other. What good is that?

It doesn't work very well. I got that for all categories and all people:
<<No quotes about "XXX" available>>

I do not understand what is for yet...

OK, I understand but I can't solve the issue yet: it do queries on "news.google.com" or "news.google.co.uk" depending your choice, but for many users just like me, when you hit news.google.com, you get Google News... in our own local language (here, in French).
And the quote system is not enabled in French yet...

bad google, bad.

Erf no, I tried with another computer (of my colleague), when he hits news.google.com he gets it in English, but there are still no quote in "In Quotes" ...

Above 9 comments were made in the forum before this was blogged,

This looks very much like this remarkable Google App engine application:

http://comparecandidates.appspot.com/

I wonder if Google contacted the authors to join their team.

Wow, it's almost identical!

Nifty idea ... but quotes can be taken out of context ... and journalists are known to misquote people ... so be careful about putting too much faith in it as "concrete units of information" ...

I asked Google "Why is your new Google In Quotes Labs tool ... nearly identical to http://comparecandidates.appspot.com? Were those done by the same engineers, did you hire them, or ...?"

They say: "You have it right: it was done by the same engineers using the public API. Take a look at the following post from this summer for more info: http://googleajaxsearchapi.blogspot.com/2008/08/howd-they-do-that.html "

All i could see was, someone quoted so and so saying this or that. I hope the in the future they are actual quotes from the person, not just someone claiming they said something. Isn't that what we hear everyday anyway?

Hi all –

Since you're engaged around the topic/content, I'd like to tell you about our site. It's called Ameritocracy (www.ameritocracy.com) and it allows you, as a user, to provide brief, source-sited statements to Support, Challenge, or simply Add Context to a quote.

You then rate the original quote for Accuracy (or Agreement), and how Relevant it is to a particular question.

Here's an example:
www.ameritocracy.com/statements/264#amcy--RSrlkS

We don't yet automatically pull quotes in from Google News, but we will. For now, users submit them. Would love your feedback.

Thanks!
Porter
