In 1997, Google didn't have a business model. AdWords and AdSense were created much later.

I read about this here: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/09/23/ten-years-later-a-third-google-founder-comes-out-of-the-woodwork/

And I'm inclined to agree with Erick:

<< By his own account, though, it sounds like Chang walked away from Google because he thought it wouldn’t amount to much. His mistake. >>

He also claims he created the word "google", but in fact it was created by Sean Anderson.

This is one hell of a way to get attention. I don't think it's true. Don't you think if you helped create the idea of a massively popular internet company, you would mention it a lot sooner?

All of his profile pages show his video link:

Digging further, there is a funny Google Group post which I'm assuming came from Usenet back in 1995:

Subject: "Hung-Hsien Chang is a Jerk"

This video has been out for months and perhaps more than a year but I'm pretty sure PageRank was already devised by the time he came into the picture.

TechCrunch has a couple new updates...

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/09/23/ten-years-later-a-third-google-founder-comes-out-of-the-woodwork/

<< Update 2: Stanford prof. Rajeev Motwani does a better job distancing Chang from the early days of Google. He came back to me with the following response:

To the best of my knowledge, his claims about being a founder of Google, coming up with the name and/or the business plan etc, are completely unfounded in reality. I am sure I would have noticed a third founder, if one existed, since I was working closely with Larry and Sergey at Stanford the time.

I do recall receiving a couple of emails from Hubert Chang in 1997 or 1998. Its been such a long time that I don’t have any recollection of their contents but it’s probable I shared those emails with Larry and Sergey. In any case, by that time the basic idea of PageRank was already in place and there was a clear intent of building a company around this. I am pretty certain that none of the three of us actually met with Hubert Chang during that time period.

Update 3: A Google spokesperson has given us the following revised statement:

There is no substance to Hubert Chang’s claims – he had no involvement in the creation of Google. Neither Larry or Sergey have any recollection of meeting him – however, given the number of people they’ve met in the last decade it’s impossible to say categorically that they never have. Rajeev Motwani, the Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Stanford, believes he may have shared some emails from Mr. Chang with Larry and Sergey in 1997 or 1998. But in any case PageRank had already been developed by that time, and Larry and Sergey had already decided to start Google >>

And here's another YouTube video that Hubert Chang did in July of this year... (Pretty much the same thing though.)

Someone should do another YouTube video impersonating Chang and claiming to invent everything that he listed on his archived webpage :-D

I don't doubt that Hubert Chang had many good ideas. The list on his homepage clearly shows why there shouldn't be any software patents! There are so many good ideas a lot of people have almost at the same time totally independent from each other. Nobody should have the exclusive right to use them.
Even if he mentioned the right ideas to the right people and they made a business out of it, doesn't mean that he deserved credit. People talk about their visions all the time – and there are times, when ideas spread and florish. What really counts is, that somebody invests time in making a consistent concept to make the idea become reality. If that is, what he did that with google page rank, then it should be mentioned and probably also rewarded. If not, then he is just bragging about missed chances.

Even if Mr Chang's claims were all true, however, 10 years ago, there were many third founders around helping Google, some of whom even had 2 PhD degrees. But they all failed to become the third founder for whatever reasons, maybe for pursuing an academic degree as Mr Chang did, maybe for researching more interesting subject, maybe for another dot com company during the first gold rush of dot com boom with better prospect.

If Mr Chang said he regret that he missed such once-in-life-time opportunity because of different value, I felt sorry for him. Because Mr Chang claimed to be the third founder, I think he's really disgraceful and ugly.

Lets put it simply: Google page ranking algorithm is one of the industries best kept secrets. If he was one of the founders, he should know it. Let him put it out there – and we'll clearly see if its the same one or not (depending on how well it works)

To try to help put this issue to rest, Chang claims his first contact with Page and Brin was in 1997. According to The Newsletter of Stanford's Office of Technology Licensing, "In 1996, Brin and Page disclosed the technology to Stanford's Office of Technology Licensing (OTL), which contacted several internet companies to help identify industrial interest in Google."
