I think (and hope) it's new:

Google News "Image Version" display the number of related images to one piece of news.

It may be a test I'm part of, but try this URL:
google.com/news?hl=en&q=&a ...

I don't think it's very new or an experiment. Google could do so much more with the much version, but it's limited to thumbnails.
