The meta tag is not new, but the class is new.

See, for example, the archived version of Google Translate FAQ from March 2007: web.archive.org/web/2007030623 ...

Aside from microformats, I think this is the first time a company wants to standardize a specific value (notranslate) for the class attribute.

I would have liked to see a class that allows translation of only certain blocks of text while the rest of the page is disabled from translation by the meta tag. This would save me from adding the notranslate class to numerous spans/divs/etc.

Technically this is very difficult to prevent. I believe you can do that always, in fact
