The new T-Mobile G1 phone, known as the Google Phone goes on sale tonight in San Francisco only.

The long-awaited multi-function gadget will be sold at only one store: the T-Mobile store on Market Street and 3rd starting at 6 p.m.

The phone will be sold nationwide on Wednesday.

The Google Phone is the newest touchscreen phone that runs on Google's new Android operating system.

CNBC's Jim Goldman calls the Google Phone the, "latest competitive threat to Research in Motion's BlackBerry juggernaut and Apple Inc.'s iPhone."

It costs about $180.
