It looks like Google inserts pics via IMG tag, then non-Gmail users will be able to see them too, right? |
Yep. They show up in Outlook too. |
Works well on iPhone / iPod Touch |
Which icons are new? I'm not a regular user of the HTML compositing mode... |
The option is new, there were NO icon before...
Also new, the new set of icons for Gmail Chat!

Strange thing pointed out by TOMHTML : if you select the "square" version of :) and a friend of you sends a "circle" version of :), you will receive the "circle" :) ... But the thing that is sent is only ":)" (nothing change between both versions) |
Perhaps there is an hidden parameter? It's hard to realize, except by sniffing HTTP data transfers. |
This is very nice! Yahoo had this since I have memory... :P |
oh, that's nice! :D
i had a greasemonkey script to convert text smiles to icons in sent and received mail conversations.
i guess i can deactivate that :) |
Tom, it wouldn't have to be a hidden parameter sent along with each smiley, it can be stored as a state for each participant in the chat. Only would have to send it when the smiley set selection changes.
This was changed in the last few months – historically if I had selected one set and the other chat participant had another, the smileys sent by the other participant to me would be displayed in my set. |
I would rather have had HTML Signatures than these things. |
it would be nice if they let us be able to customize which smiles we like to be in the pre-selected smilies in gchat when we pick regular, circle, or square. |
My firefox extension Justsmile
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/5562
is still better than this new function in gmail
Wtih justsmile, you don't need your mouse to add smiley. You just type ":)" ou somethin else an it is instantly changed inton a picture.
I'm sad they didn't add smiley the way i do |
[Edit: rich-text compositing -> rich-text composing] |
Moktoipas: I'm _glad_ they didn't. I don't want flashy icons randomly dispersed through my text, especially where I didn't even mean to have a smiley at all.
|
Coolness! I will probably keep using my own solution of All-In_one Sidebar (http://firefox.exxile.net/aios/faq.php) that shows my own custom smileys-page in the sidebar, but to have some standard smileys just there in the Gmail compose window is cool.
And, Mike, for HTML signatures I use Blank Canvas Gmail Signatures:
http://blankcanvasweb.com/pages/detail/id_9/n_gmail_signatures/
works like a charm! |
Don't get me wrong, I love Gmail, but why are they spending time developing things like this instead of really useful addons like view by date, view by sender, subject etc. They're decorating the house before it's even built. |
Veky
With my extension it is easy to edit the smiley list and the text equivalence of each emoticon. This way, you never have smiley where you don't want.
I would have like this kind of feature in gmail.
|
I think this feature target Japanese market... They are crazy about such "emoji"... |
What a fantastic example of organizing the world's information! |
Cool emoticons, and a lot to. |
You spent a lot of your time to provide those links. Hey thanks! |
This is great. It shows in Outlook too. Thanks

I don't have it in Google Apps for your Domain. Anyone else? |
No, I don't have it in Google Apps either Travis. |
I agree with Moktoipas
right now the smileys gmail offers is... well...lame. How about letting us use the free smiley packs you have advertising here?
