I think this is a good improvement. If you have ever watched videos on Hulu and then go back to Youtube, you feel like the player is inadequate.

YouTube switching to 16:9 has been a good idea, but too many videos had been uploaded letterboxed (i.e. they were 16:9 videos uploaded as 4:3 with black bars above and below), so they are treated as 4:3 and are pillarboxed (i.e. black bars are added at the left and the right of the video), and the result is that they are now windowboxed (i.e. they have a black border all around). YouTube people should be smart enough to have an algo that checks when a video is windowboxed and restore it to full-screen...

They noticed that "the default values that YouTube provides when writing its automatic HTML <object> code remain width = "425" height = "344", even for videos that are natively widescreen."
