I think this is a good improvement. If you have ever watched videos on Hulu and then go back to Youtube, you feel like the player is inadequate. |
plus you get advertisments while playback now! |
Finally!
It looks so much better and bigger!
720p Video's look great :D |

The difference in size for 16:9 videos in the old player is vast. |
[moved from "YouTube and 16:9"]
YouTube switching to 16:9 has been a good idea, but too many videos had been uploaded letterboxed (i.e. they were 16:9 videos uploaded as 4:3 with black bars above and below), so they are treated as 4:3 and are pillarboxed (i.e. black bars are added at the left and the right of the video), and the result is that they are now windowboxed (i.e. they have a black border all around). See e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LenPKPqvdJA
YouTube people should be smart enough to have an algo that checks when a video is windowboxed and restore it to full-screen... |
But those black borders is what we don't want to see: http://www.betanews.com/article/What_YouTubes_new_169_aspect_ratio_means_for_users/1227629022 |
They noticed that "the default values that YouTube provides when writing its automatic HTML <object> code remain width = "425" height = "344", even for videos that are natively widescreen." |
