This site (no inlink) encyclocentral .com started popping up in google serps very frequently on long tail searches, with only scraped content (and popups) and that has enoyed me alot. Seems after a short rise (top 500 sites) the SE believed it was spammy* too:
alexa.com/data/details/traffic ...

* = not listed in google anymore when searching for their domain name:
google.nl/search?hl=en&q=E ...

As owner of [encyclocentral.com] I take some offence at your post.

1. "with only scraped content " Encyclo does not contain any "scraped" content. All content is orignal to the site, not a single article is "scraped".

2. "(and popups)" while Encyclo does use popunders in a limited manner (one per IP, per 24 hours), we have never have displayed a popup.

3. "SE believed it was spammy* too" The current downturn in traffic was schduled and expected by us shortly after the holiday season as we move to a new url layout on our site.

With 5.3 million pages index, Encyclo is hardly "blocked" as your title claims: google.com/search?hl=en&sa ...

Your comments are not factual, you might want to do more research before you make such bold false statements.

[put at-character here]dconnor: no offense was intended when I wrote that on this forum. Getting into the top 500 sites is a very nice achievement.

1) I was wrong about the scraping, I got that idea because thousands of articles on your site are paraphrased from e.g. wikipedia articles. But this is not scraping.

2) A popup or popunder both get blocked by my popup blockers when entering the site, so I don't notice the difference. I doubt people believe there is a real difference.

3) I base the blocking / penalty on the fact your site doesn't rank in the top 30 for your site's name "encyclocentral" in google. The fact that pages from your site are indexed (site:encyclocentral.com) is not correlated to its ranking: And in this case when I look at google results for titles of your pages combined with alexa data, you don't seem to be ranking anymore and lost many visitors in a short period (few days). You are right this could also be due to the fact thousands of pages currently in the index have been removed from your site and end up in a 404.
