That's status and online indicator is apparently only visible to your chat buddies.
You can now also choose a short profile URL which includes your Gmail username.

e.g. http://www.google.com/profiles/tonyruscoe
It's a shame they don't adopt the same functionality as Picasa Web Albums by allowing you to choose another username so that you don't have to reveal your Gmail username to people though...
