Yahoo-owned homepage builder Geocities will be closing later this year, Yahoo announced at http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html . It's a relict of the 1990s, and also happened to be the location of my very first online thing (I had a background-sound-wallpaper-frame-based homepage in the "SiliconValley" area of Geocities in 1997)... so fare thee well, Geocities!

Geocities, frames, bad GIFs, horrible designs. And that's just the website for the cycling club I go out with :P (No, I don't have anything to do with the website)

Geocities has been around for as long as I can remember, it's going to be strange to see it go.

When http://www.altavista.com closes down, it will truly be the end of that online generation. Geocities and AltaVista are two of my earliest online memories.

Heh. I like Kevin Fox's take on things:

<< GeoCities was the first product I worked on when I started at Yahoo in 2001. I won't miss the closed nature of the group (they were an acquisition and would have preferred to let the engineers design rather than have a UX designer) and I wish they'd taken my advice about making a blogging/PHP environment instead of a java-based static page editor, and if they'd followed up on my contacting Ev about Yahoo acquiring Blogger (2 yrs before Google bought them), but it's still sad to see things die out. >>

I wonder what used to actually be there before the holding page... :-)

Archive.org has something from 2001 or so, but the early page there was in 1997. I created the homepage after someone from Datex-J (sort of what Germans used before the WWW, following "BTX"*) suggested I upload some of the games to the WWW. So I learned HTML to post the game sources there (to "Jester's Webpage", that is :)).

*BTX/ Datex-J looked something like this:
