CNET article states:

"Google now intends to deliver customized search results even to those searching its site without having signed into a Google account.

Google keeps a history of your Web searches for up to 180 days, using what it says is an anonymous cookie in your browser to track your search queries and the results you most frequently click on. For several years it has allowed those with Google accounts to receive customized search results based on that history, but now even those without Google accounts will receive tailored results based on a history of their search activity, Google said in a blog post late Friday.

There is a recent story by Kim Zetter on Wired about Cryptome releasing a Yahoo guide concerning information that Yahoo gathers and sells about its users.

Wired says:

"The guide also reveals that the company retains the IP addresses from which a user logs in for just one year. But the company’s logs of IP addresses used to register new accounts for the first time go back to 1999."

"According to this list, Yahoo charges the government about $30 to $40 for the contents, including e-mail, of a subscriber’s account. It charges $40 to $80 for the contents of a Yahoo group."

Saw the "View customizations" link today while searching for the word "answers". It pointed to a page which allowed me to opt out on another page (http://www.google.com/history/optout).
