Search Engine Land notes that Google disabled search box auto-completion for certain queries along the lines of "muslims are" and "canadians are". Google on their help page says:

"The search queries that you see as part of Google Suggest are a reflection of the search activity of all web users. While we always strive to neutrally and objectively reflect the diversity of content on the web (some good, some objectionable), we also apply a narrow set of removal policies for pornography, violence, and hate speech."

I see three issues here. The first is that Google is engaging in doublespeak:

"...we always strive to neutrally and objectively reflect the diversity of content on the web ... we also apply a narrow set of removal policies..."

The above sentence is self-contradictory, unless the word "always" is changed to something like "usually".

The second issue is that a search for [muslims are] is not in itself hate speech.

The third issue is that if Google wants to reduce the risk of embarrassment, they'll need to block a lot more auto suggestions. Try typing [muslims should], for example.

You receive auto-suggestions when you search for [muslims support] but not for [muslims oppose]; for [muslims love] but not [muslims hate], and for [muslims make] but not [muslims break].
