I'm surprised they're considering the new filter menu without icons.

The new UI of Universal Search (1) is now consistent with the design of Docs, Mail, Calendar, Voice and Google+. I think it means they're getting ready to change Google into a personal search engine (2). I'm sure we'll soon see contacts, emails, voice messages, events and docs pop up into classic Google searches.

I've been waiting for this for years. Fortunately, the product line has been considerably streamlined (3) in the last months, so this move will be easier for users and product teams.

I wonder if they'll use the new design for Music, Youtube (4), Android Market and others. And if they'll dare kill Reader, Groups and Finance...

(3) e.g. Picasa becoming a Google+ feature
(4) they're almost there with Cosmic Panda
