U.S. officials are opening personal mail that arrives from abroad when they deem it necessary to protect the country from terrorism, a Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman said Monday.
Grant Goodman, an 81-year-old retired history professor, drew attention to the policy after a letter he received from a colleague in the Philippines was opened and resealed by Customs and Border Protection, and only then sent on to him.

2 weeks ago I received a package from the US, the German customs also opened it, and I had to go there to be witness. I was really curious what they were searching for and told them I'm no terrorist... but they said this is the law in Germany, and that they must look out for Swastikas and illegal porn. The sender was Fantagraphics, I suppose they're not on the whitelist... because apparently they don't check Amazon packages like that. |
Phillip : acttally I posted this because there is a lot of under current chatter happening w/DHS and how they (may be) over step their mandate...
imho ..something is happening here..and we are not seeing the whole picture.. you just confirmed that cross border screening is happening all over... what is the big risk ..each time they open a letter, it costs them money and no gov has that amount to spend on targeting.... something specific is happening.. (any way thats my gut feeling) |
This is not breaking news, as the link that you refer too was dated 01/10/2006... That is 21 days ago.
The article was already made public and has already been on the nightly news in the US.. and also posted on numerous web sites and blogs...
