See this is a great idea: I dont really trust paypal, which Is why I never got it.

If google were to host it, I would trust that (I already do trust them with my info.)

Google has denied this will be a paypal rival (from WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113918924045565647-olBvfujq9sUoi9Hft8J2kg1pxOE_20070205.html?mod=rss_free): "While Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt confirmed in press accounts that the company was building a payment service, Mr. Schmidt also denied it would directly compete with PayPal. Mr. Schmidt said Google didn't intend to offer a "person-to-person, stored-value payments system," which many people consider a description of PayPal's service."

But if it's not a competitor, then what is it?

Naah, I think its more for their adsense / adsense customers.

Corsin, I think you're on the right track, as they mentioned this relating to adding a feature to adsense where an icon would appear next to advertisers using GBuy. But it would seem the actual functionality would still be like that of Paypal.

/pd: Due to your choice of username, it's impossible to lookup your previous posts (because http://blogoscoped.com/forum/posts-by-%2Fpd.html tries to resolve the forward slash, causing a 404 error). Was that intentional? :)

Niraj, Nope not at all intentional.....thats just my handle / nic

Corsin: can you explain further ? how will this help adsense and or customer ??

Yeah, looks like that works. It must be the auto-generated link that doesn't. I just found it interesting :)

Actually goog search term praser removes the '/' and only returns for "pd"- like 38.8m results :)-
One should take a bash at "slashpd" to get more realistic and relevant search results!!

Rumors of GMoney, I mean GBuy have been floating around for a while.

What's obvious is that eBay feels Paypal is vulnerable to an attack from a competitor with the kind of credibility Google brings. Don't think it would work if Microsoft would be doing it.

In online auction industry people loathe to use Paypal because it is associated with eBay. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much of a choice until now.

Posted about it on our Auction Friends:

I'm sure it would be an excellent source of revenue for the company, even if they slash Paypal's extortionate fees.

Let's hope they have better mediation in place to prevent the "missing money" syndrome, making that a wound in the side of Paypal instead of a wound in the side of Internet payments.
