I suspect Google is branding this using two different words – i.e. "chat" and "talk" – is because you can only "talk" with Google Talk, whereas you can "chat" using either Google Talk or Gmail + Chat.

I like Chat History future because it works with every Jabber client, not only official one.
It's really great future, and I've been waiting for this for years ;) I'm going to migrate from my present jabber server to gmail.com, but I can see several problems with it:
1. You can't delete any port of chat history (?!)
2. You can't send messages to offline users (although on other jabber servers you can).
3. The strange thing with Jabber resources – http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Talk-Help-Discuss/browse_frm/thread/56cc49fd26b790b9/76005b6cdd8fb343

Notice they updated the privacy policy...

http://www.google.com/talk/privacy.html as they state in point 9 of the Chat History Page.

This:
# You need a Google Account and a Gmail address to access Google Talk. Google asks for some personal information when you create a Google Account, including your email address and a password, which is used to protect your account from unauthorized access. A Google Account allows you to access many of our services that require registration.

was replaced by this:
# Account activity. When you use Google Talk, we ask for the same information that was requested when you created your Gmail account, including your first and last name, a username (which will be used for your email address) and a password to create your account.

in the privacy policy. A new way to create gmail accounts?

> The Google help on this says you need to “Click Options in the bottom-left
> corner of the chat window”... either that’s an error or they are talking about a
> different Google Talk version

[I think they're referring to the upcoming version of Google Talk/Chat actually embedded within Gmail (rather than the separate Google Talk program) – check out the screenshot here, look at the chat interface at the bottom right: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/images/chat_callout.gif ...]

It's cool to see how some of it translates from chat history to timeline. I like the grey times on the left; and if you have a pause in the convo of more than a few minutes you get a horizontal rule with the amnt of time on the right. It gives it very natural breaks in the conversation, somewhat like breaking it up into different messages in conversation view would be but a bit more subtle.

There's no delete button in the Chats tab. The only way I found to delete individual chats ismove a conversation to the Inbox and then delete it from there..

Jorge – what's worse part of conversation that I deleted that way is now back in my chat history ;|

Ever since they announced this, GMail hasn't been working for me. First, I couldn't forward a message. (The message box saying "Ooops, try again in a few seconds" popped up.) Then, writing and sending a normal message was disabled, using the message box again. Then, logging out, I recieved a Server Error.

Do you think this is because they're updating everyone with the new Google Chat software? I haven't seen anything new, other than the Chat file box in the mail sidebar.

Correct me if I am wrong, but do I see a departure from the usual Google policy of not making product announcements/enhancements in advance?

You can delete chats by moving them to the inbox and deleting them from there. Or move them to anywhere but the chats-window, you can even search for them and delete them from there. They probably just forget to activate the delete button.

Hello, Yesterday I have seen a chat service on my Gmail account. I don`t like this. They who want to talk should use "Google Talk", but an e-mail browser is not a place for it. I don`t want to have a word "chat" in my Gmail browser! I probably dismiss my Gmail account. I don`t want when I read my e-mail messages and someone disturbs me during doing it.

Radek, you can turn it off either in settings or using the link at the bottom of the page

Sunil, they announced it when they released it, but it's rolling out to all the users slowly.

I love that chat but here is a simpile thing you guys can do. Don't check your email for like al most 60 or 12 days and then they will give that to you. My littlie bro did that and then they gave it to him and i alwasys check my email. He dos'nt check for almost a whole week! But i always do. But i am trying to stop checking it so i can get it too. I wish you only have to say you want it and you will get it. I wish that. And i really do.
