What do they need all those domains for, when they generally launch services under logical subdomains of google.com anyway?

Dan they usually have both. So you can enter http://www.googlemaps.com which will redirect to local.google.com... I guess they both want to get the people who enter the easiest thing and also block the domain against abuse.

hmm.. I don't really understand why we need all those planet maps.. i mean it's cool.. but i'd rather see google releasing a calendar rather than zooming into a moldy tofu in a refrigerator.

check Google Analytics. This service runs under www.google-analytics.com

Which is a good thing. Otherwise, they could easily correlate your web usage (via Analytics) with your Google or Gmail account. Same domain -> both cookies get sent. "Google tracking individual users general web usage" would be a nightmare for them.

Current events prompt The Question...

...Would Google Mars censor images of alien artifacts if found by our orbiters if some body or being gave the order?

I think the aliens will just telephatically change the Googler's minds about it.
