Google Toolbar 2 for Firefox (View post)Tony Ruscoe | Thursday, April 6, 2006 18 years ago • 5,871 views |
For some reason, when you click the button the subscribe to a feed, it appends "&client=firetools" to the URL, which removes the option for subscribing to the feed using Google Reader – e.g.:
http://www.google.com/ig/add?feedurl=http://www.example.com/feed.xml&client=firetools
vs.
http://www.google.com/ig/add?feedurl=http://www.example.com/feed.xml
Why would they do this? |

Thats a shame. I was hoping for the bookmarks, custom buttons, and account sign-in features in this version. They are available in the lastest IE version. Why do you think Google didn't implement these? |

Tony, that does seem very odd. Even in the options for subscribing there is no mention of Google Reader. Is there any way to change the code? |

Hey, I want to subscribe feeds only in Google Reader : nothing about that in Toolbar ?
note : French version is aviable too. |

I tried to get the extension, but all I got was Google Toolbar v. 1. Can you give me the exact download location of the xpi file? |

http://dl.google.com/firefox/google-toolbar.xpi
That is it. I don't think you can get the version 1 one anymore.
Anyhow: so far looking at things this version is not much of an upgrade. The lack of Google Reader stuff is really stupid (I bet this is rectified really soon). The toolbar gives the chance for Google to do something that it is generally not good at – integrate. This is done ok. Gmail mailto is nice, subscribing to your Google Homepage is nice, Google Bookmarks would have been nice. |

Also:
mailto links open in a new window! This sucks. Make it a new tab!
AutoFill has a nice hold Shift feature. I don't know if this is new. |

Just as Ionut Alex. Chitu said, I tried to get the extension as well. However, even after I uninstalled the v1 google toolbar (V1.0.20051122), restart firefox, install v2 toolbar, and restart firefox again, I end up with V1.0.20051122! I've checked the profile folder for reminants of v1, but to no avail. Any ideas? I've tried uninstalling v1 and installing v2 a number of times now and it just isn't working... |

For all of you wanting to subscribe to feeds using Google Reader, you can change this line in your "prefs.js" file:
user_pref("google.toolbar.subscribe.aggregators.iGoogle.url", "http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=%feed%&client=firetools&hl=en");
Simply remove the "&client=firetools" part of the URL.
Your "prefs.js" file can be found at a location similar to this one:
C:Documents and Settings<username>Application DataMozillaFirefoxProfilesdefaultprefs.js |

(Or you could just type "about:config" into your Firefox address bar, of course...) |

I was hoping them to add more IE Toolbar options to the Firefox one... the mailto Gmail is great though, BTW I'm stick with 1.0 because I made my own version of it and added the IE bookmarks button (using the bookmarklet) and almost duplicated the layout... but the Toolbar licence agreement forbids me to re-distribute it :'( |

Tony : you must remplace this line by :
http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/%feed%
:-D |

Possible Bug: With the Google Toolbar installed I find that RSS Icons and Security Padlocks float a little away from the end of the location bar (about the width of either of these icons away). |

Philipp could upload the xpi of GT for Firefox v.2 to his server. |

If anyone is having trouble getting it you could try this:

Yup, here too. The RSS icon is somewhere off the right border now. Looks silly, I wasn't sure what caused it, but suspected the toolbar... |

Like some people above I can't seem to get V2 even if I uninstall V1 first. It's just a gess but have you guys installed Google Pack like I have? If so; Looks like we're stuck with it tilll they update the link in the Google Updater Program |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
Philipp: Ah. So it is the toolbar. Looks horrible!
Mrrix32: I don't have Google Pack installed. |

"Yup, here too. The RSS icon is somewhere off the right border now. Looks silly, I wasn't sure what caused it, but suspected the toolbar..." I know why : when you are on a "dangerous" (I don't know who I can translate that) website, at left, there is a warning sign at the place, thanks to "Safe Browsing" |
Sam Davyson | 18 years ago # |
TOMHTML: Pretty poor stuff though isn't it? Since 99% of sites are "Safe". That space is wasted. |

Exact :) test this here : http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT2/intl/fr/phish-o-rama.html |
